Statement by the Afghanistan Freedom Front on the Death of Asylum Seekers along the Herat–Mashhad Route
The Afghanistan Freedom Front expresses its deep sorrow upon receiving reports of the tragic loss of several Afghanistan citizens who, while attempting to migrate to the Islamic Republic of Iran, lost their lives due to severe cold conditions in the border areas between Herat and Mashhad.
We extend our sincere condolences to the families of the victims and pray for eternal peace for those who lost their lives in this heartbreaking incident. We also wish patience, strength, and resilience to their bereaved families during this difficult time.
This tragic event highlights the grave humanitarian situation faced by many people of Afghanistan who feel compelled to leave their homeland despite the serious risks involved. The willingness of citizens to undertake such perilous journeys reflects the depth of despair, insecurity, and lack of viable prospects within the country.
Such incidents continue to occur at a time when assurances regarding security, stability, reconstruction, and economic improvement are frequently emphasized, yet the lived reality of the population tells a markedly different story. The ongoing displacement of citizens and the deterioration of economic and social conditions raise serious and legitimate questions about governance, accountability, and the future of the country.
The continuation of the current situation has contributed to increased poverty, diminished public confidence in the future, restricted access to development opportunities, and the compounding of political, economic, and social challenges across Afghanistan.

The steady erosion of political and civil freedoms, along with the depletion of national resources and the narrowing of social and economic space for citizens, has had far-reaching consequences for Afghanistan society.
